Since the launch of the D1000, the world’s first portable anti-angle grinder bike lock, in 2021, we are proud to have led the way in anti-angle grinder bike security. And now, in 2025, we’re taking it a step further with the MD1000 disc lock. Compact, portable, and utilising the same anti-angle grinder technology, the MD1000 is redefining portable motorcycle security.
Like all Hiplok products, the MD1000 was designed by co-founders John Abrahams and Ben Smith. To give us an inside look, we sat down with John to hear the story behind the lock.
What is the MD1000?
The MD1000 is the ultimate security disc lock, built to withstand even the toughest angle-grinder attacks thanks to its advanced material technology. Tested to the highest security standards, it carries both the Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond and ART 4* ratings. If you’re after a lock that’s easy to carry but doesn’t compromise on protection, the MD1000 might just be the one.

Q. What was the initial motivation to design MD1000?
A. The idea behind the MD1000 was to give motorcyclists the same high level of anti-angle grinder protection that our other 1000 Series locks offer, but in a more compact and convenient form for a mobile security device. While the DX1000 and D1000 are excellent locks, they’re bulkier, so we wanted something easier to carry without compromising protection.
We also saw the MD1000 as a product that would complement the existing range. Disc locks are a well-established way to secure motorcycles, and we wanted to give riders an option to combine them. For example, using the DX1000 on the rear wheel and the MD1000 on the front. That combination provides an extra layer of security while keeping things practical.
Q. What’s the significance of adding the MD1000 to the 1000 Series?
A. I think what makes the MD1000 a really important part of the 1000 Series lineup is that it’s the most portable and lightest product. Not just within the range, but actually on the market when it comes to anti-angle grinder protection.

Q. What makes MD1000 unique?
Obviously, it is one of the few anti-angle grinder disc locks on the market. But it also has some really cool and unique features. One of the exciting USPs is the magnetic Reminder Tag. One of the downsides of using a disc lock is the potential hazard of riding off with it still attached to your bike. So it’s really convenient for riders to have an easy way to remind themselves it’s on the bike. Traditionally, people have used a cable for that, but we’ve developed a unique rubber reminder tag that attaches to your ignition. It’s a simple, convenient way to make sure you don’t forget.

Q. Why did you decide to launch two colour options for the MD1000?
A. Well, obviously, all of the 1000 Series is currently black, which is great and fits into the Hiplok brand aesthetic. But we’ve had some feedback from consumers asking for brighter colours within the 1000 Series, and we thought the MD1000 was the perfect product to start with. So we’re trying a neon yellow.
It also makes sense from a practical point of view. Because the MD1000 is the smallest, it’s also the product most at risk of being forgotten when you put it on. A bright colour helps riders notice it more easily.
Q. Are we planning to do any more colours for other 1000 Series locks?
A. Potentially, yes. We might expand the neon yellow range to some of our other products, so watch this space!

Q. Were there any challenges during the design and production phases?
A. There were some challenges in making it anti-angle grinder, similar to the ones we faced with the DX1000 and D1000. Applying the anti-angle grinder material to the body of the MD1000 was tricky because of the different materials and temperatures involved. The production process itself was a challenge, but we managed to find a solution. And now we have the MD1000.

Q. Are there any important things riders should keep in mind when using the lock?
A. The most important thing for riders to remember is that they’ve got the lock on. It might sound obvious, but it’s really crucial not to drive off with it attached. That’s why we recommend using the Reminder Tag whenever you use the disc lock. Without it, the lock could break and damage the brake calliper. So, the main thing to remember is to use the Reminder Tag that comes with the disc lock, or another type of reminder cable, to keep yourself safe.
