“At 65 years old and with a full knee replacement. I thought my bicycle days were over, but thanks to an e-bike. I can get back out on the road and continue my adventures…”
“I stopped owning a car 2 years ago…I was fed up with sitting in traffic anyhow and most of my journeys are solo and tend to be between 2 and 20 miles each way, so an e-bike meets all my current needs…”

“I had a brain haemorrhage in 2013. After that it was a hard struggle to get back into cycling. But after a 10-year break, I manage to get started again with the Gazelle electric bike…”
Whether for those with physical limitations or those seeking a faster, more efficient way to commute, e-bikes meet a range of needs. In this blog post, we’ll explore the advantages of e-bikes and offer tips on how to keep them secure.
What is an e-bike?
An e-bike is a bicycle with a battery-powered motor that assists with pedalling. When you press down on the pedals, the motor kicks in, making acceleration much easier. E-bikes are ideal for those who want to stay active without pushing themselves too hard. With their growing popularity, many people now choose e-bikes over traditional bicycles because of the reduced effort required. However, they usually come with a higher price, which makes securing them even more important. So, here are a few tips to help keep your e-bike safe.
1. Choose the right lock
E-bikes are normally heavier and have bigger frames compared to standard bicycles, so it’s essential to choose the right lock. Make sure to check the locking length of the locks before buying – locks with a longer shackle or chain are ideal for securing e-bikes. Additionally, consider the security level of the lock. Since e-bikes are high-value items, it’s recommended to invest in locks with a Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Gold rating or higher, such as Hiplok GOLD chain lock or the 1000 Series D locks.
2. Locking location
Locking your e-bike on the street
If you leave your bike for a long time, choose a highly visible area. Thieves are more likely to target a bike that’s located in a quiet place. Also, it’s important to choose the right locking location. Look for an immovable and strong object such as a lamp post, bike racks, etc. This prevents thieves from tampering with or removing the object itself.
If you leave your bike for a few minutes, find a spot where you can keep an eye on it, such as outside a café window or a shop entrance. This stops opportunist thieves from working unnoticed. A lightweight bike lock can be convenient for quick stops. However, in a high-risk area, consider a heavy-duty lock, such as D1000 or DX1000.
Locking your e-bike at home/storage
If possible, keep your bike in your home which is generally the safest place. This also protects the bike from bad weather. A locked shed or garage is a great alternative as the bike is secure and out of sight. Make sure to keep the shed or garage in good condition. Wherever you choose to store your e-bike, always ensure it is locked. 60% of bike thefts occur from or near the victim’s home. Ideally lock your bike to a secure fixing point or anchor, using a chain or D lock.
3. Use locks properly
Secure both the frame and wheels of your e-bike. If a single lock doesn’t give you enough reach, consider using multiple locks. For example, combining a D lock with a chain (such as the DXXL) can offer enough locking length to secure your bike (even multiple bikes!). Furthermore, try to fit the lock as tightly as possible to the bike, leaving little room for tools to be inserted, which makes it harder for thieves to attack your bike.
4. Extra security
Make sure that you remove all accessories after locking your bike and try to take off the battery if you can. The battery is the most expensive part of your e-bike so if you remove it when locking it up, it will be less tempting for thieves to attack.
For added security, consider using secondary locks. A lightweight option, such as the Z LOK COMBO, can be used to secure your helmet or provide extra reinforcement to your main lock. This additional layer of protection offers peace of mind, and makes it less attractive for thieves to target your e-bike.
