FAQs

When do I use a disc lock?

Disc locks offer a compact and portable way to secure your bike, making them ideal for short stops. They’re lightweight and easy to carry, so they don’t take up much space or add extra weight to your bag. For added security, you can layer your protection by using additional locks alongside a disc lock. For the highest level of protection, consider Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond–rated locks like the MD1000, an anti-angle-grinder disc lock.

Is a disc lock or chan lock better protection for motorbikes?

There’s a right lock for the right situation. Disc locks offer a compact and convenient way to secure your bike while on the move. Chain locks provide more reach, allowing you to secure your bike to an immovable object when leaving it for longer periods. The type of lock you need depends on the level of security required and where you’ll be using it. For more tips, check out our post: Which is the best motorcycle lock?

Is there any angle grinder proof disc lock?

The MD1000 is one of the lightest anti-angle-grinder motorcycle locks available. It has been independently tested against angle-grinder attacks and holds the Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond rating. For ultimate security, it works alongside other anti-angle-grinder products in the Hiplok 1000 Series range.

What does the Reminder Tag do?

The Reminder Tag helps to remind you to remove your lock before riding. You can attach it to your ignition, handlebar clamp bolts, or place it over the handlebar.

Will MDX/MD1000 fit on my bike?

Both the MDX and MD1000 have a locking area of 44mm x 8mm with a 12mm locking pin. Check the size guide on the product page to see if your bike is compatible. If you have any questions about sizing or compatibility, our support team is happy to help.

Where do you put a disc lock on motorcycle?

Where you fit a disc lock depends on its compatibility. You can either pass the pin or shackle through one of the holes in the brake disc or place it over the brake disc, securing it so the wheel cannot move. The MD1000 and MDX are designed to fit over the brake disc.

Always use a reminder tag to avoid accidentally riding off with the lock still in place.

Is the disc lock easy to break?/ Can disc locks be cut?

Some disc locks can be fairly easy to break because of their compact size and the materials used. These days thieves more commonly use an angle grinder to cut locks. The MD1000 is built to resist angle-grinder attacks, addressing a weakness many disc locks face during theft attempts.
For the best protection, use a grinder-resistant lock like the MD1000 and layer your security with an additional measure, for example a chain lock or D lock so thieves need more time, tools and effort to steal your bike.

How do I open a lock if I lose the key?

Our locks come with replaceable coded keys. If you lose or damage the key, you can order a replacement with the unique code that you’ll receive with the lock. To order a replacement key, visit here.

Can disc locks be picked?

Lockpicking is not a common method used by thieves. Picking requires a high level of skill and patience, whereas most thefts involve quicker and more forceful methods like cutting or damaging the lock.

Our locks use an anti-pick lock cylinder that has been tested by independent experts, including the Master Locksmiths Association and the French Champion Lock Picker, with results featured in Le Monde. We take pride in the quality of our key barrels, designed to make picking difficult in real-world situations.

What is the difference between MDX and MD1000?

The key difference is in the material. The MD1000 is made with angle grinder resistant material for a higher level of security, while the MDX is not. The MD1000 holds Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond accreditation and the MDX holds Sold Secure Powered Cycle Gold.
The MD1000 also comes with two reminder tags and a carry case, whereas the MDX includes one reminder tag.
