BICYCLE CHAIN LOCKS

Bike chains are made from series of hardened steel links. You can buy the chain on its own and pair it with a lock. Or you can buy bike chain that already has a lock attached.

Chain locks come in various lengths and thicknesses. The one you need depends on your purpose and security needs.

Hiplok Chain Lock Ranges

There are two Hiplok chain lock ranges:

ON-THE-MOVE (WEARABLE)

Safe to wear around your waist, without locking to your body. These chains don't inhibit your cycling.

AT HOME (LOOP END)

These chains are longer, thicker and heavier for extra security at home.

They have a loop end design. This is where you thread one end of the chain through the other. This creates a loop you can tighten around your bike. You then secure the loop to your anchor point, using a separate D lock or padlock.

Easy to spot

Given the size of chain locks, they're usually quite obvious to a would-be bike thief. The mere sight of a bike lock is often enough to deter the opportunist thief.

Flexibility

Chain locks are long enough to lock most bikes to most objects in many different ways. If you've got multiple bikes or bigger bikes, they're great.

Home Security

Chain locks are a great option for securing your bike at home. Combined with a wall or ground anchor, such as Hiplok ANKR, you’ve got a decent security set up. They are also particularly useful when securing multiple bikes together.

FAQs

How to pick a bike chain lock

It depends on your use. If you are carrying your lock with you, choose one of our lightweight, wearable chain locks. If you are locking up at home, choose one of our home security chain locks. Either way, ensure your chain is the right length before buying.

The higher the Sold Secure rating, the more secure it'll be. If your bike insurance company requires a Sold Secure Gold rated bike lock to validate your policy, pick one of those. Otherwise, assess your risk level. For example, if you're locking up in a more remote location where thief could be a lone with your bike for a long time, choose a more secure lock. If you're only locking up for short pit stops, your lock won't need to be as secure. OurFind My Lock toolshould help you pick.

How to lock a bike with a chain

1.     Lock your bike in a busy area with high footfall. Not down a quiet alleyway, where a bike thief has more time to work on the lock without interruption.

2.     Lock your bike to a strong, immovable object. Look for a dedicated bike stand and stay away from wire fencings or railings that can be easily cut through

3.     Secure your frame and rear wheel to an immovable object

4.     Keep the lock away from the ground. This makes it more difficult for the thief to attack with bolt croppers.

Do chain locks damage your bike frame?

Our chain locks won’t damage your bike thanks to the rubberised anti-scratch design.

How do you carry a chain lock on a bike?

Most chain locks are quite heavy and difficult to carry. So we developed a range of wearable bike locks. You can safely and comfortably secure them around your waist. All without locking it to your body. These locks are lightweight, making them even easier to carry around.

Are bike chain locks good for 2 bikes?

It depends on the length of the bike chain. Longer ones (such as the Hiplok MEGA CHAIN) can be used on multiple bikes. But you should always measure up before buying.

What are the best chain locks for bikes?

It depends on what you're looking for but our strongest one is the Hiplok MEGA CHAIN. It has the highest Sold Secure rating, which is Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond.

Can chain bike locks be cut?

With the right tools and enough time, any bike lock can be cut, including cable bike locks. However, chain locks are some of the strongest locks you can but and offer a good deal of resistance to being cut. This is where a chain lock's Sold Secure rating comes in. The ratings are bronze, silver, gold, diamond pedal cycle and diamond powered cycle.

Diamond powered rated locks are the most secure. Bronze chain locks, on the other hand, are less secure and are more about preventing opportunistic thefts.
