Introducing The New Z LOK COMBO

New for 2025, the next generation Z LOK COMBO has been updated by Hiplok co-founders and product designers, Ben Smith and John Abrahams. We had the chance to catch up with John to hear more about the thinking behind it, what’s changed, and how it can be used.

What is Z LOK COMBO?

Z LOK COMBO is a steel-core, lightweight security tie lock with resettable combination code. Designed to stop opportunist theft, Z LOK COMBO has revolutionised “café-stop” security with its Lock and Hold design.

Q. What was the initial motivation to design a new version of Z LOK COMBO?

When we launched the original Z LOK COMBO, it was something quite different and unique at the time. A lot of people found it really useful for café stops and all sorts of other situations. It quickly became a go-to option, which was great to see.

From there, we started thinking about how we could make it even better. There were a few small things we knew we could improve, making it easier to change the code and read the numbers, for example. We also thought about expanding the colour range and adding a carry bracket to make it more convenient on the go.

All of those ideas together felt like a good reason to give the product a refresh. So rather than just tweaking one or two things, we decided to bring out a new version that brings those updates together.

Q. What role did customer feedback play in shaping the product?

Customer feedback is a key part of how we design and develop our products. As with many of our other locks, we had a lot of valuable input from people using the original Z LOK COMBO out in the real-life situations.

One thing that came up quite a bit was the size and placement of the numbers. Some people found them hard to read, especially in low light or without glasses, because the numbers were quite small and placed on the side of the lock.

This is where it got a little technical. The original combination features a circular dial, which made it tricky to fit all ten numbers clearly. But we saw it as a challenge worth taking on. We went back to the design and found a way to make the numbers larger, while also updating the internal dial mechanism to support the new layout.

So yes, customer feedback was a big driver behind this update. Listening to what people actually need and building that into the product is something we always try to do.

Q. What makes the Z LOK COMBO unique?

The main idea behind the Z LOK COMBO is a steel-core, lightweight security tie with a resettable combination code. It was designed to prevent opportunist theft, and it really changed the game when it came to adding an extra layer of security.

What made it stand out at the time was that there was nothing else quite like it on the market. The combination of a zip tie-style lock with combination codes was completely new.

With the updated version, we’ve kept that core functionality but added an easy to carry option. One of the unique points is the carry bracket, which can be attached to different parts of your bike. It means you can take the lock with you more easily.

Q. Is there a particular reason you included a bracket with the lock?

Yes, that decision really came from customer feedback. Quite a few people told us they wanted a better way to carry the original Z LOK COMBO on their bike. If you’re out on a road ride, you don’t always want to throw a lock in your pocket or bag, so having a simple way to mount it to the bike just makes sense.

We also wanted the new Z LOK COMBO to feel more like part of a system rather than just a separate product. That’s why we made sure it integrates with TRACK, our AirTag™ holder. So, there’s a bit of crossover there. It adds another layer of function and gives the lock a more purposeful setup for everyday use.

Q. How do you expect people to use Z LOK COMBO?

Ultimately, in the same way people have always used it. Just with a few added benefits. I expect people will continue using it to secure all sorts of things. Bikes, helmets, scooters, kids’ bikes, accessories, even snowboards or bike gear when you’re out and about.

It’s always been about offering a lightweight layer of security for when you need it most. And that core use hasn’t changed.
