BR1000 has been designed to be the ultimate bike lock bracket. Â As with all Hiplok products, the BR1000 has been designed by Hiplok Co-Founders John Abrahams and Ben Smith. To give you an inside look, we had a chance to discuss the background behind its development with John.
In this blog post, we’ll dive into what BR1000 is, why we decided to design it, the challenges we faced along the way, and the bigger goal driving us forward.
What is BR1000?
BR1000 is the ultimate bicycle lock bracket for Hiplok’s anti-angle grinder locks. The versatile design of BR1000 solves the headache of transporting your D1000 or DX1000 on your bicycle. It can be directly mounted on a pannier rack or attached to your handlebar or frame when combined with KlickFix™ or Ortlieb™ systems. BR1000 offers a sturdy build while riding, keeping your lock firmly in place.

Our co-founder, John, explains the journey behind the development of BR1000. Let’s find out the full story together.
Q. What was the initial motivation to design BR1000?
A. The initial motivation was to offer a practical bicycle mounting attachment for D1000 and DX1000. Because both locks don’t fall into our ‘CLIP+RIDE’ category, they don’t have conventional clips that allow you to wear it. The reason that we didn’t have D1000 or DX1000 as a wearable design, is because they are a little heavier and bigger, so it’s not practical to clip it on to a bag or a belt. They didn’t have any means of carrying when we first launched them, so we wanted to offer something that is more practical to use and permanently attached to a bike.

Q. What makes BR1000 unique?
A. The BR1000 can be used in multiple areas on the bike. Most brackets are specific to one location. You generally would have a mount that just works on the inside triangle of the bike, a pannier mounting, or handlebar bracket. The unique thing about BR1000 is that it allows you to put it on multiple different placements. This gives you a lot of flexibility. This sometimes requires pairing up with an additional attachment from KlickfixTM or OrtliebTM, which is a common way to attach an extra bracket. For instance, if you’ve already got a handlebar mounting for a basket, you can use the same bracket to attach the BR1000.
Another unique thing about BR1000 is that it also is expandable, and it works for two different sizes. Essentially with one product, you can use both sized locks, D1000 and DX1000.
Q. What was the biggest challenge you faced while designing BR1000?
A. The biggest challenge was making it work for both D1000 and DX1000. But also offering multiple mounting options. Building this adaptability into a single product was a significant challenge. Instead of designing separate products for each system, the goal was to combine all features into one solution. This approach came with complexities. Lots of moving parts to coordinate and problems to solve. On top of that, the product needed to work practically: it had to hold the lock securely, avoid falling or rattling, and deliver reliability in real-life use.

Q. Why did you decide to use the Klickfix / Ortlieb carry systems?
A. These systems are among the most common on the market and offer excellent versatility in placement options. They’re compatible with a variety of handlebar setups and seat post mounting brackets, making them adaptable to most bikes. This ensures the BR1000 can work seamlessly with almost any bike model, as long as it uses one of these carrying systems. In our opinion, these systems currently offer the best solutions available.
Q. What part of BR1000 are you most excited for users to experience?
A. It’s been fascinating to integrate the product with existing carry systems. Combining it with these established product ecosystems not only enhances functionality but also makes it more accessible to a wider range of users. Considering that DX1000 is quite bulky to carry, this integration addresses a key barrier for cyclists with expensive bikes, where carrying such a product might have been inconvenient. By offering more versatile carrying options, it ensures greater usability and convenience for cyclists.
Q. How do you hope BR1000 impacts users?
A. Hiplok’s ultimate goal is to encourage more people to ride bikes. In an ideal world, cycling would be the norm—promoting healthier lifestyles and benefiting the environment. One of the biggest barriers to cycling, however, is the fear of bike theft. If using D1000 or DX1000 can help reduce thefts, it could give people the confidence to invest in high-value bikes, such as cargo bikes worth thousands of pounds, knowing they’re protected by a reliable lock. This sense of security could inspire more people to choose bikes over cars. Ultimately, it’s about making cycling safer, more accessible, and more appealing to everyone.
