Hiplok Joins the C86ERZ Unity Bike Ride

The C86ERZ Unity Bike Ride is a community event where cyclists across London provide support to the homeless community. Hiplok joined the event as an official supporter, ensuring that volunteer cyclists could secure their bikes while participating by supplying Z LOK COMBOs and ORIGINAL SUPERBRIGHTs.

We had the opportunity of speaking with Verral, the founder of C86ERZ, to learn more about the event and the inspiring mission behind it.

Q. Can you tell us about the C86ERZ Unity Bike Ride and its purpose?

The C86erz Unity Bike Ride brings together cyclists from across London, including those on cargo bikes, to gather at a central location with a shared purpose: supporting London’s homeless community. By utilizing the power of cargo bikes, volunteers distribute essential items such as hygiene products, food, and warm clothing to those in need. This collaborative effort highlights the strength of community action and sustainable transportation in addressing homelessness.

Q. What inspired the team to start this initiative?

My name is Verral Paul Walcott, and I founded the group in 2020 at the start of the lockdown. During that challenging time, there were no clear guidelines to help keep people safe, and many of the usual support systems were unavailable. With contactless payments being the primary method for transactions, basic necessities like food became harder to access for those in need.

The government’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” message felt out of reach for the homeless population, who had no homes to stay in. While non-essential shops were allowed to stay open, for us, that meant spaces selling things like eggs, butter, and milk were considered essential. But for a homeless person, an “essential” store would be one where they could buy a sleeping bag, warm clothing, or other survival gear.

At the same time, public toilets were closed, further compounding the difficulties faced by those without stable housing. It became clear that we needed to take action to support these vulnerable individuals.

Q. What inspired you to choose cycling as the mode of transport for the event, rather than other options?

I chose bikes because they offer the fastest way to navigate London while securely carrying essential cargo to help those facing homelessness. As cyclists, we can cover a large area in a single night, reaching multiple boroughs across the city. In fact, with different groups assigned to specific areas, we’re able to help up to 27 boroughs in one night, ensuring support gets to those who need it most.

Q. How does it feel to have Hiplok supporting the event this year?

Having Hiplok’s support this year means a great deal to me, as well as to the entire group. Hiplok is undoubtedly the best at what they do, and their involvement in this year’s ride truly shows their commitment to our cause. This collaboration/ sponsorship is something that I have to pinch myself as to how far we have come with C86erz in such a short time. 

Q. Are there any ultimate goals for your team to achieve in the future?

We’ll keep pushing the movement to get the voices of thousands of people across the uk that don’t have a voice or a platform to say they need help and support.

The team successfully completed the ride on 20th December in Camden Town, London. It was great to see the team securing their bikes with Hiplok. Here is what Verral said.
